The primary goal of this course is to provide a basic introduction to the study of child psychology from conception through adolescence. The emphasis of the course is on normal physical, cognitive, and social development. Prominent theories of child development and research methods used in developmental psychology are reviewed. Specific topics that are covered include: aggression, attachment, gender roles, language development, moral development, school achievement, and sexuality.
Four examinations will be given during the semester. (The last of the four exams will be given during final exam week.) The top three test scores will count toward the final grade, (i.e., each student's lowest exam score will be dropped). Missed exams may count as the lowest score, including the final exam. All exams will be multiple-choice in format and will cover material from the text, lectures, and films. The exams will not be comprehensive, (i.e., they will cover only that material assigned after the previous exam). The three exams will contribute equally to the course grade. Each will consist of 40 multiple-choice problems and thus, the total number of exam points it is possible to earn is 120. In addition, students are required to write up a small observational study (3-4 pages, 30 points) of some aspect of child development. Thus, the total number of points that is is possible to earn for the semester is 150.
