Course Description

This course will attempt to explain human sexuality from an evolutionary perspective. The course is based on the assumption that various aspects of human sexual behavior and mechanisms for regulating them evolved to facilitate reproductive success of humans. Some examples of topics are: does female orgasm and pregnancy sickness have functional significance? Do men and women use different context-dependent sexual strategies? Is sexual orientation partly determined by genetic factors? The assigned textbook covers these topics from a sociological perspective which should balance the evolutionary perspective of assigned readings and class lectures.

Grading Policy

There will be three in-class exams, equal in length. Exams will consist of multiple-choice and short answer essay. There will be no comprehensive final examination. Grade: Typically 15-20% A's, 20-30% B's, 5-8% D's, and 2-3% F's (the remainder C's) have been assigned in the past according to the following formula: A = 93% or better of the average of the three highest total scores for three tests
B = 83-92% of the three highest total score average
C = 73-82% of the three highest total score average
D = 63-72% of the three highest total score average
F = less than 63% of the three highest total score average
