Course Description

This course begins with an examination of the neurological, behavioral, and social sequelae of commonly abused drugs including stimulants, narcotics, hallucinogens, marijuana, sedatives, anxiolytics, anabolic steroids, alcohol, nicotine and tobacco, caffeine, prescription and OTC drugs. The course then focuses on the impact of evidence-based treatment practices and the criteria that characterize effective drug abuse treatment.

Grading Policy

There will be 2 exams and 3 written assignments for the course. The first two papers will utilize a "point/counterpoint" format guided by the opinions of people on both sides of significant issues about drug use. The third paper will be an APA style review of the literature focused on a topic chosen by the student. The final paper will be between 10-20 pages long and include a substantial reference section. Students will have the opportunity to revise their paper based on professor feedback prior to final submission of the paper.
