Course Description

This course blends theory and application to develop an academic and personal understanding of culture and its effects on behavior. Topics include: What is a culture and how does it evolve? How do we learn our own culture? (the development of norms and the socialization of values); How do we react to cultural others when we are at home (stereotypes) vs. when we are over there (culture shock and adaptation)? What issues face migrants and their children (generational differences in assimilation)? How can we develop intercultural competence? Activities include in-class activities, fieldwork, and a community visit.

Grading Policy

Course requirements include a semester-long journal, several short papers, and one independent project/paper. The course uses a non-traditional method of assessment called The Learning Record which tasks the student with demonstrating learning across the semester.
