The course will focus on four fundamental issues in social development. Each issue will be illustrated by lectures, discussions, and readings from a major topic in social development. The issue of Nature/Nurture will be illustrated by research on the topic of parenting: Do parents determine child outcomes? One view (nature) says, no; the other (nurture) says yes. The second and related issue reviews the relative roles of early vs. later experiences in social development and will be illustrated by research in early attachment and what early attachments predict about later development. The third and related issue, Direction of Causality (who socializes whom?), will review research on the topic of child temperament and how temperament might influence the reactions of parents and peers. The fourth issue, domain coupling and interactions (how does cognitive development influence social development and vice versa?) and multiple causality, will review research on the topic of aggression and how faulty information processing is correlated with aggressive behavior in children. We will examine the issue of multiple causality in development by discussing research on single vs. multiple influences on development for all these topics.
