An article in the New York Times written during the recent election draws upon current research in psychology to examine how large differences can be put aside to create engagement and willingness to seek areas of agreement. Psychology professor and chair James Pennebaker comments on his recent research with Molly Ireland, in which conversation partners quickly and subconsciously begin to speak alike — even when they don’t care for one another.
