his course will consider the development of Buddhist art throughout Asia. A major focus, however, will be upon the early traditions that emerged in India, including the development of pilgrimage sites associated with the Buddha's life such as Bodhgaya and Sarnath. The changes in Indian Buddhist art and how this shaped the devotion of later Buddhist practitioners as well as the ways in which these artistic traditions were then transformed as the religion spread to other parts of Asia will also be considered. Sites outside of India to be studied include Borobudur in Indonesia, Yungangand Dunhuang in China, Kyoto in Japan and Lhasa in Tibet.
GRADING: 80% for written work, 20% for participation
