This seminar will consider a range of controversial issues involving the relationship between religion and the state. Central to the course will be discussions involving how to balance the free exercise of religion and the non-establishment of religion as required by the U.S. Constitution. The course will also examine the role of religion in the United States historically and currently. The primary focus will be the U.S.; however, some attention will be given to other societies.
