Wed, September 21, 2011 • 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM • Mezes Auditorium (MEZ 1.306)
The Department of Religious Studies presents a Faculty Book Celebration in honor of Professor Thomas Tweed's new book America's Church: The National Shrine and Catholic Presence in the Nation's Capital.
Featuring a summary and panel discussion with Professors Chad Seales, John Traphagan, and Thomas Tweed.
America's Church tells a history of 20th-century Catholicism in the U.S. from the perspective of the National Shrine in Washington, DC, one of the most significant religious sites in American Catholicism. Through a detailed history of the National Shrine, from the laying of the foundation stone to the deep religious meaning it came to have in the lives of ordinary Catholics, America's Church sheds light on the multifaceted and complex landscape of American Catholic culture. Thomas A. Tweed is the Gwyn Shive, Anita Nordan Lindsay, and Joe and Cherry Gray Professor of the History of Christianity in the Department of Religious Studies at The University of Texas at Austin.
A reception will follow.
