ITALY 2009: ROME, OSTIA, AND POMPEII
COLLOQUIUM ON MATERIAL CULTURE and ANCIENT RELIGION
July 4-14

The Colloquium is a ten-day program for scholars of New Testament and Christian origins interested in engaging with archaeology and material culture in their research and teaching. The program will feature presentations by scholars in the field; presentations on research projects by seminar participants; and site visits.

The itinerary begins with four days in Rome and a day trip to Ostia. The Colloquium then travels south for five days at Pompeii, Naples, and Herculaneum. Sessions will provide overviews of specific methods or materials, such as epigraphy, field techniques, small finds, and recent theory in archaeology; and discussions of specific topics of interest, such as domestic space, public religion, socioeconomic status, civic identity, and the incorporation of archaeology and material evidence in research and teaching.

Conveners of this Colloquium are Steven Friesen (UT-Austin), Daniel Schowalter (Carthage College), Christine Thomas (UC-Santa Barbara), and James Walters (Boston University). Site specialists will include Joseph Alchermes (Connecticut College); John Clarke (UT-Austin); Nicola Denzey (Brown); Karl Galinsky (UT-Austin); Rabun Taylor (UT-Austin); and L. Michael White (UT-Austin).

Sponsored by the Institute for the Study of Antiquity and Christian Origins, and the Department of Religious Studies, The University of Texas at Austin.
