Course Description
This course examines the earliest manuscripts that show features of developing East and South Slavic (Serbian, Bulgarian) languages and literatures. The earliest monuments of Croatian and West Slavic languages and literatures will also be discussed in their cultural and historical context.
Grading Policy
Final paper 65% Practice midterm 20% Active class participation 15%
The final paper will be a four-page translation of an assigned or mutually agreed upon early (pre-1700) Slavic literary monument. The translation will be accompanied by a linguistic analysis of the text that focuses on morphological and syntactic "deviations" from Church Slavonic norms.
