Course Description

Course Content: Many students of foreign languages indicate that their interest in studying the language is closely tied to a desire to read the relevant literature in the original. This desire presents us with an excellent opportunity to attract students hooked on language study for life through the literature. Yet, for many instructors the inclusion of literary texts in the classroom presents new problems of methodology and logistics to make best use of these culturally and artistically rich materials. In fact, these texts often offer the student unique insight into the land, people and customs of the foreign culture, as well as linguistically rich material for study. The seminar will use traditional and non-traditional literary texts to help integrate the teaching of foreign language with the presentation of the foreign culture. Materials for our consideration will cover a variety of genres, from prose to poetry, drama to historical documents. Participants will become familiar with the most recent methods for "grading" the appropriateness of a literary text for use in the language classroom and for assessing the student's reading proficiency. Seminar presentations will demonstrate model classroom treatments of literary works of the participants choice in an appropriate foreign language and culture context. Slavic and English language texts primarily will be used as sample materials, but instructors and students of other languages are encouraged to bring their own texts and languages to the seminar table. Required readings are in English, with supplementary readings in Russian and other foreign languages.
