Course Description
Course description: This course is designed to teach advanced writing and oral communication skills in the Russian language based on the use of the variety of texts from current Russian media, short stories, films and videos. The goal of the course is to help students learn how to discuss diverse cultural and political issues of the Russian contemporary society at an advanced level. The topics will include discussion of the Russian literary movement of "Derevenshiki" (for example, Vasiliy Shukshin's short long story "Kalina Krasnaya" and the film based on this story in which the writer plays the main character), watching and analyzing Russian investigative journalism programs, and current grass root political and environmental movements in Russia.
