Tensions between national and religious identities have long been an obstacle in the process of nation building in Europe and elsewhere. But religious diversity has not hindered national unity in all cases. Albania is one of these exceptions. In this lecture, the Albanian scholar, Artan Hoxha, will try to explain the reasons why in a country like Albania, where the population is divided into four different religions, these differences have not been transformed into interreligious conflict and have not undermined national unity. Hoxha will trace the role of the Albanian state in overcoming this barrier and its efforts in strengthening the national unity.

Artan Hoxha finished his Master’s degree in Albanian Contemporary History at the University of Tirana, Department of History in 2008. In the same year he began to work in the Department of History at the University of Tirana as an Assistant Pedagog with a specialty in Albanian Contemporary History. In November 2010 he became a Lecturer and started his PhD studies at the University of Tirana. The topic of his dissertation is “Religion communities and the Communist state in Albania .”
