Tricia S. Ryan, Ph.D. student in the Sociology Department and Population Research Center Graduate Trainee, talks about her numerous research trips abroad, focusing on her Fulbright-supported dissertation data collection from October 2008-December 2009 in Kyrgyzstan. Her talk will encompass a discussion of the pros and cons of lengthy field work and will discuss numerous parts of the process, from finding funding, to deciding whether to work with partner agencies abroad, how to find participants, how to run a research project in a foreign country, how to deal with the inevitable problems of qualitative research in one's second or third language and so on.
This talk is aimed at anyone considering fieldwork in a foreign country looking for an honest discussion of the difficulties and the benefits that are unique to the experience. Bring questions.
