The Prague author Magdalena Platzova will read from her novel Aaron’s Leap and from a collection of short stories.
Magdaléna Platzová is a Czech writer and journalist, currently living in New York. She worked as an actress, journalist, translator, and as an editor for the Prague literary weekly Literární noviny. She was a literary and cultural editor of the journal Respekt, for which she now reports regularly from New York
Platzová published several novels and collections of short stories, as well as three stage plays, poems, literary reviews and articles. Her last novel Aaronův skok (Aaron´s Leap, Torst, 2006) is inspired by the life of the Austrian born Jewish painter and art teacher Friedl Dicker-Brandeis who is best known for her work with Jewish children in the Terezin Ghetto in 1942-44.The novel was translated into German; Magdalena’s short stories appeared in English in journals such as Two Lines. Magdalena read her work in Czech Republic, Germany, and USA.
The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung wrote about “Aarons Leap”: “The novel is impressive not only for its story, but also for the scope of its reflections, among them the still unresolved chapter of the Jewish people as part of the first Czechoslovak Republic and the subsequent attitude of the communist state against this minority. (…) The novel] is among the best books which reached us from the Czech Republic, and it is also an early high point in the art of this author.”
