Russian Film Series: Mermaid (Rusalka)

The Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies is proud to announce the second screening in the Spring 2014 Russian Film Series!
This week's screening will feature Mermaid (2007), in which Alice (Shalayeva) grows up in a small seaside village where she attends a school for the mentally disabled because she refuses to speak. But after moving to Moscow with her family, she meets Sasha (Tsyganov). She saves his life, falls in love with him and becomes his housekeeper to get close to him.
This film was nominated for the Achievement in Cinematography at the 2008 Asia Pacific Screen Awards, the Grand Jury Prize in World Cinema - Dramatic at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, the Bronze Horse at the 2008 Stockholm Film Festival, and the Grand Prize of the Festival at the 2007 Sochi Open Russian Film Festival. It also won the FIPRESCI Prize at the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival, the Independent Camera at the 2008 Karlovy Vary International Fim Festival, the Directing Award in World Cinema - Dramatic at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, the Grand Prix at the 2008 Sofia International Film Festival, and the Grand Prix - Golden Apricot at the 2008 Yerevan International Film Festival. Additionally, for her performance in the film, Mariya Shalayeva was nominated for the MTV Movie Award - Breakthrough of the Year at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards (Russia) and won Best Actress at the 2007 Sochi Open Russian Film Festival.
