After the brutal slaughter of Tsar Boris Godunov and his family, Russia descends into chaos. Guided by faith and mysticism, Andrey, the only witness to the massacre, transforms himself from servant to cavalier and sets off on a quest to save Princess Ksenia, the missing daughter of Godunov. Andrey joins forces with Prince Pozharski, the people's army leader, and faces down the Polish army in an explosive, bloodsoaked battle for Moscow.
This film, from 2007 and only recently released with English subtitles, stirred controversy in Russia due to Mikhalkov's close ties with then Russian President Vladimir Putin. Dr. Thomas Garza, Director of CREEES, will give a brief introduction to this screening to provide historical and contemporary context, and to discuss the controversial political implications of the film.
The films of Nikita Mikhailkov, Russia's revered and controversial director/actor/producer, will be the subject of this summer's film series. 143 minutes.
