Joan Neuberger article translated into Russian

Posted: January 22, 2010

Eisenstein's Angel, an article by Professor Joan Neuberger about Sergei Eisenstein's movie classic Ivan the Terrible, has been translated and published in the leading Russian cinema journal, Kinovedcheskie Zapiski (92/93; 2009).  Her article originally appeared in the July, 2004 issue of the The Russian Review (63:3; July 2004).  Professor Neuberger describes the imagery that Sergei Eisenstein used for the backdrops of his 1944 film.  Ivan the Terrible is a complex, multi-layered historical account of the 16th century emperor.   The film is rich in artistic imagery, with frescoes of the interior Kremlin chambers figuring prominently, and which serve as a narrative motif. Dr. Neuberger’s article serves as a guide for explaining the artistic intentions of the film’s director.

The sketches and frescoes attached served as models for the film’s set design.
