On Friday, May 10, members of the Austin Polish Society joined faculty, staff, and students of the Slavic Department to celebrate the inauguration of the Polish Studies Endowment.  Mary Gawron, President of the Austin Polish Society, presented COLA Dean Randy Diehl with a check for $45,000, which will form the foundation of the endowment.  Funds from the endowment will be used to support study or research abroad in Poland by students of the University, talks or events related to promoting Polish Studies, scholarly research related to Poland, or instruction in the Polish language, history, or culture by faculty of the University.

Consul MaƂgorzata Cup, representing the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Los Angeles, spoke about her admiration of the Austin Polish Society for its involvement in the community, and Dr. Mary Neuburger, Chair of the Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies, expressed her appreciation of the ongoing relationship with the Austin Polish Society, and mentioned the newly-established exchange program with Jagiellonian University, the oldest university in Poland.  Funds from the endowment will be made available as scholarships to enable students to experience the culture of Poland first-hand.

After the ceremonies, everyone enjoyed a reception with music by Slavadillo and the Zarnowski Ensemble.
