SOC 309 • Chicanos in American Society

Course Description

This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the field of Chicana/o Studies. The course covers the following topics: the history of Chicanas/os in Texas and the United States; the role of immigration in shaping the Chicana/o experience in the U.S; the emergence and legacy of the Chicano Movement; Chicano/a educational experience; the Chicana/o family' Chicana/o participation in the labor force; and Chicana feminism. The readings and class discussions will aid students in developing a critical understanding of U.S. social forces affect the experiences of Chicanas/os through a critical analysis of race, ethnicity, gender and class.
