Course Description

This is a special course for students who applied and were selected for the REU summer program sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The course will focus on basic concepts and analytical techniques in demography, with a special focus on racial and ethnic populations. Among the concepts that will be studied will be fertility, mortality, migration, population pyramids, and cohort effects. The course will also have a lab component in which students will the opportunity to learn how to analysis population data with the STATA software. The course will include three exams, homework and lab assignments, and a demographic report. Specialists in demographic research will be invited to make presentations to the class regarding demographic concepts and methods.
