SOC 321K • Publishing Sociological Research
3:30 PM-5:00 PM
Last year the Department of Sociology began publication of an annual journal devoted specifically to undergraduate research: Sociological Insight. The journal publishes high-quality work produced by undergraduates from around the country, but it is edited and produced exclusively by UT students, with assistance from faculty advisors. This proposed course is designed for students who are, or will be, working on the journal. Key objectives will involve: (a) an introduction to processes of scholarly journals, such as the peer review system; (b) exposure to the process of manuscript reviewing and editorial decision-making; and (c) direct application of these lessons to the production of the 2010 edition of Sociological Insight.
Several short papers responding to readings 30%
Several reviews of manuscripts submitted to Sociological Insight 40%
Peer critiques of reviews by classmates and others 20%
Regular attendance and active participation 10%
There will be no textbook. We will read a packet of articles dealing with social science publication issues, as well as other materials on manuscript reviewing and journal editing.
