"The Poker Club: Gendered Power in Higher Education" - lecture by Professor Jammie Price
Time: Thursday, May 3, 3:30 pm
Location: Jester Room 217A
Appalachian State University administrators suspended sociology professor Jammie Price in mid-March after four students reported discomfort with a documentary on sexism in the pornography industry and a lecture on institutionalized racism in sports. Price will discuss why she believes the disciplinary action is retribution for her willingness to raise critical issues in class and a violation of her academic freedom.
A tenured full professor with more than 20 years of teaching experience, Price learned she would not receive a due-process hearing and she was instructed not to communicate with any students, staff, or faculty. The American Association of University Professors has issued a letter of sanction against the Appalachian State.
For details on the case, see these news articles in the Winston-Salem Journal, Inside Higher Ed, and The Chronicle of Higher Education.
The talk is sponsored by the Committee of Counsel on Academic Freedom and Responsibility.
