Welcome to the Department of Sociology

The Department of Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin is one of the largest and most highly ranked sociology departments in the country. Our group of 45 tenured or tenure-track faculty members allows us to offer an excellent range of opportunities—both inside and outside the classroom—for undergraduate and graduate students. The 2007 US News and World Report Guide to Graduate Departments ranked our program as tied for 14th in overall quality in the country and among the top 10 sociology departments in public universities throughout the country. This high esteem, along with the very high quality of life in the Austin metropolitan area, makes it easy to see why our department has become a very attractive place for some of the leading young sociologists and graduate students to make UT-Austin their home!
