Financial Aid for Graduate Students

Applicants may be considered for several types of financial aid. Students are nominated by the department. No additional materials are required unless otherwise indicated.

University Fellowships

The Office of Graduate Studies allows each department to nominate a few applicants for University Fellowships. Funded from a variety of sources, these fellowships can be used alone or in conjunction with other offers.

Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in Latin American Sociology

Mellon Fellows conduct field research in Central and South America and the Caribbean. Topics include any subject related to Latin American sociology. The fellowship provides tuition, fees, conference and international travel allowance, research expenses, and health insurance during your entire term of study; a Teaching Assistantship for two years, plus a two-year fellowship, contingent upon maintaining satisfactory progress.

Graduate Traineeships in Demography

Outstanding students specializing in Social Demography may be nominated for a Graduate Traineeship. The Population Research Center administers two training grants that provide stipends for predoctoral study. These awards have a monthly stipend plus health insurance for 12 months, tuition and fees, and travel to the annual meeting of the Population Association of America.

Research Internship

Different from the Research Assistant, the Research Intern conducts independent research in conjunction with a selected faculty member. Students selected for this fellowship often present results of their internship at conferences, including PAA and ASA. The Internship provides a one-year stipend plus tuition and fees for that year.

Teaching Assistantship (TA)

The department usually offers several Teaching Assistantships to new students. Benefits include a monthly stipend, tuition assistance, and insurance coverage. See the Office of Graduate Studies Student Employment page for further information.

Research Assistantship (RA)

Research Assistants are selected by individual faculty members and funded from a variety of grantors. The Population Research Center, the Center for Criminology and Criminal Justice Research, the Graduate School, the School of Social Work, and several individual faculty members have recently sponsored Research Assistants.
