Admissions Requirements
Applicants must meet the minimum requirements set by the Graduate School, namely:
- 3.0 GPA or higher on all upper-division and graduate coursework
- take the verbal and quantitative portions of the GRE.
(The GRE subject test in Sociology is NOT required .) - International Applicants only – take the TOEFL.
These requirements cannot be waived.
Applying
The Department only accepts applications for the Fall semester. We do NOT defer admission.
The application is a TWO-STEP process: separate application materials are collected by the Graduate and International Admissions Center, and by the Department of Sociology (see below). All documents should be received by the proper destinations by December 1 , for the next academic year. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Early applications are strongly recommended.
STEP 1. The following application materials are to be submitted directly to GIAC from your institution or via the web at www.utexas.edu/student/giac. These materials include only:
- The Online Application for admission
- Application fee (nonrefundable)--$50.00 for US applicants; $75.00 for International applicants
- Two official transcripts of all senior colleges & universities attended
- Official GRE scores
- Official TOEFL scores (International applicants only)
***It is the applicant's responsibility to confirm with GIAC that they have received the above materials. To check the status of those documents received by GIAC, go to http://utdirect.utexas.edu/nr/appstat.html.
STEP 2. The following materials are to be submitted directly to the Department of Sociology, AT ONE TIME (IN ONE PACKAGE, INCLUDING RECOMMENDATION LETTERS), IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER:
- Three letters of recommendation (please collect the letters and include them in your packet to the Sociology Department. Have the recommender sign over the seal of the envelope to show that the letter is confidential. [Cover form])
- A copy of all materials submitted to GIAC including: transcripts, printed application, GRE scores and TOEFL scores if appropriate. Photocopies are acceptable
- Statement of purpose, no longer than 3 pages double-spaced (Cover form)
- Writing sample (Please send one 10-20 page double-spaced academic, sociological writing sample that you have written in English. Please do not send anything over the page limit, including entire theses.)
- Curriculum Vitae or resume
