Doctor of Philosophy Degree Requirements

Doctor of Philosophy with Non-Demography Specialization

A total of 54 hours of graduate work, including work performed for the Master's degree, must be completed in graduate status, excluding thesis and dissertation hours.

  • Statistics & Methods (12 hrs)
  • Theory (6 hrs)
  • Sociology Electives (12 hrs)
  • Proseminar (6 hrs)
  • Specialization in Department (9 hrs)
  • Supporting Work Outside the Department (9 hrs)


Doctor of Philosophy with Demography Specialization

A total of 57 hours of graduate work, including work performed for the Master's degree, must be completed in graduate status, excluding thesis and dissertation hours.

  • Theory (6 hrs)
  • Sociology Electives (9 hrs)
  • Training Seminar (3 hrs)
  • Demography Specialization (9 hrs)

  • Supporting Work Outside the Department (9 hrs)

Students entering with a Master's level degree from another institution may petition to transfer up to 24 hrs of coursework. Contact the Graduate Admissions Coordinator for specific details.

By the end of the third year, students should finish their coursework. In the fourth year, students take their comprehensive examinations, defend their dissertation proposal and advance to doctoral candidacy.
