Professor Shapira Receives Southwest Book Award
Posted: January 22, 2014
Professor Harel Shapira has recently won the Southwest Book Award for his book Waiting for José: The Minutemen’s Pursuit of America. This book focuses on the Minutemen, a group of civilian volunteers who regularly patrol the southern border to prevent illegal crossings. In order to fully outline the individuals in this group and their motives, Shapira interacted firsthand with the Minutemen by living among them and patrolling with them. Currently, he is working on his next book about gun owners and the National Rifle Association, examining the notions of self-defense and why people own guns.
The Southwest Book Award is being sponsored by the Border Regional Library Association, with this year's awards banquet to be held on Februrary 22 in El Paso, Texas.
