Awards

Sociological Insight awards the top paper with the best undergraduate paper award. A panel of faculty judges determines the winner.

All manuscripts that are accepted for publication will be considered for the award.

Issue 1 (May 2009)

Sociological Insight received 52 submissions from 33 universities for Issue 1, May 2009:

American University, Augusta State University, Beloit College, Bethune-Cookman College, Davidson College, Fisk University, Harvard University, Loyola University Chicago, Macalester College, New York University, Pennsylvania State University, Presbyterian College, Princeton University, Rice University, Sonoma University, Southwestern University, Spelman College, Syracuse University, Texas State University, Truman University, University of California Santa Cruz, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, University of Chicago, University of Alabama-Birmingham, University of Iowa, University of Maryland, University of Minnesota, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Texas at Austin, Vanderbilt University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Wake Forest University.

Among the final submissions that qualified for entry into the paper competition, based on high-quality and excellence, the winners in 2009 were:

1st Place Winner--Alex Park, "A Tale of Two Townships: Political Opportunity and Violent and Non-Violent Local Control in South Africa"

2nd Place Winner--Jennifer Barnes, "Style and Consumption among East African Muslim Immigrant Women: Intersection of Religion, Ethnicity, and Minority Status"

3rd Place Winner--Ashley Leyda, "Sex Offender Recidivism in Minnesota and the Importance of Law and News Coverage"

The Panel of Faculty Judges for the 2009 Paper Competition was comprised of: Mark Warr, Michael Young, Robert Freymeyer, Shannon Cavanagh, and Thomas Pullum.
