SPN 387 • The Literature of Trastámara Spain
10:00 AM-11:30 AM
The House of Trastámara came to power in Spain in 1369, when Enrique de Trastámara, an illegitimate son of Alfonso XI of Castile and Leïn, slew his half-brother Pedro I and became king. The reign of the Trastámaras ended with the death of Fernando el Catïlico and the proclamation of Carlos I, the first Habsburg monarch, as King of Spain in 1516. It is this enormously rich period in Spanish history that will be our focus over the course of the semester.
The writing will account for 80% of the final grade; informes will account for 10% and class participation will account for 10%.
Most of the texts will be in a packet of readings that will be available for purchase at Central Duplicating. Some books will be ordered by the Co-Op (Manrique and Rojas).
