Course Description

An overview of modern Brazilian literature, from later Romanticism (1870s) to modern prose and poetry (early 1980s). Course will investigate the meaning of Modernity, Modernization, and Modernism; and it will adopt a historical, cultural, aesthetic, and literary approach to study the most relevant works. Brazilian Modernism will be the focal point of this course, which includes the study of the realism-fantasy paradox among the first Modernists; the cultural and artistic impact of the "Modern Art Week" (São Paulo, 1922); and Regionalism versus Nationalism (1930s-1940s) trends.

The course will also look into the origins of modern Brazilian drama and will consider the following topics expressed in Modernist manifestoes: liberty of invention, social revolt, and fragmentation of the Self, urban chaos, and national identities.
