Course Description

This course has four main goals: 1) introduce students to basic concepts regarding the short story as a literary genre; 2) study the development of the short story in Spanish America; 3) help students develop a theoretical frame for talking about literature; and 4) introduce students to some of the best short story writers in Spanish-America.

Grading Policy

There will be two midterm exams and a final. Student grades on these tests will provide the basis for 90% of their final grade. The additional 10% will be determined according to class participation.

Selected readings by Esteban Echeverria, Maria Luisa Bombal, Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortazar, Jose Donoso, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Juan Rulfo, Elena Garro, Jose Maria Arguedas, Juan Carlos Onetti, and Silvina Ocampo.
