Course Description

Introductory course in Spanish phonetics, with a thorough review of Spanish pronunciation. Recommended for Spanish majors, particularly for those preparing to teach. The course will integrate theoretical concepts and the technical description of the sounds of Spanish with the practice of pronunciation exercises. Students will learn to do phonetic transcriptions, and learn about regional differences in the pronunciation of Spanish. Non-native students will also develop improved pronunciation through oral drills and readings. The textbook (Barrutia & Schwegler) will be followed closely for the understanding and the study of theoretical concepts, as well as exercises and oral drills. The packet of materials contains sets of questions, additional information, summaries and outlines of chapters, and exercises for oral practice. In general, the materials in this packet take precedence over what is in the book.

Grading Policy

The final grade will be based on student performance in the following: Exams (2) 50 % Quizzes (3) 30 % Class Work 20 % (Class Work: Attendance, Participation, Homework, Oral Drills, Dictations, Phonetic Transcriptions.)
