POR 381 • MODERN LATIN AMERICAN NARRATIVE: GREAT ESSAYISTS

A comparative examination of the most representative Latin American essayists (Spanish American and Brazilian) who mainly contributed to the understanding of national histories and identities. This seminar will focus on the question of the regional vs. the global, the imaginary nations, Spanish America vs. Brazil, and the essay writing as a literary genre. Readings from such writers as Sarmiento, Martí, Vasconcelos, Euclides da Cunha, Rodó, Martínez Estrada, Gilberto Freyre. Lectures, discussions, and oral presentations will be conducted in Spanish and Portuguese. Reading competence in Spanish and Portuguese required.
3 Hourly Tests: 45% Final Exam: 30% Oral Presentation: 10% Class Participation (Attendance, Active Participation, Homework): 15%
