SPN 387 • Medieval Spanish Literature
9:30 AM-11:00 AM
In this course we will read works representative of the wealth and breadth of the literary tradition of medieval Spain. We will consider the major poetic genres of the time: lyric poetry ("jarchas" and "cantigas de amigo"), epic poetry, "mester de clerecía", and "romancero" and the relationships between them as well as didactic prose and drama. Critical readings will be assigned along with primary texts. This course is general in nature and is designed to provide an introduction to medieval literature. Students with little or no prior experience with early Spanish literature may enroll without fear.
Students will give "informes" based on critical readings (how many depends on how large the class is). They will also write four discussion notes (4 pages each) during the semester. The discussion notes will account for 80% of the final grade; "informes" will account for 10% and class participation will account for 10%.
