Course Description

This course has two basic objectives. One is to learn how to apply methods of logic and formal semantics to the description of meaning properties of words and sentences (i. e. their entailments and truth conditions). The other is to elucidate the description of specific problem areas of interpretation in Spanish, viewed as a Pro-drop language. In regards to lexical meaning, the focus will be on the interpretation of de-adjectival verbs, and other aspectual verb classes. For structural meaning, attention will be centered on the structure and interpretation of wh-clauses, both relative clauses and wh-questions, and in general, clauses with wh-operators. Special consideration will be given to null arguments, null/ explicit pronouns, and reflexive constructions. Subsidiary topics are the copula SER/ESTAR, the semantics of quotation, and quantifier binding.

Grading Policy

1. A mid-term exam (one-week take-home), Sept 28-Oct 05 (40% course grade). 2. A term paper (can be co-authored), Proposal due Oct 05; First draft due Nov 18; Final version due Dec 09 (60% course grade).
