Course Description

The literary development of the character of the Native-American in Spanish-American literature has evolved from a static anthropological stock model character to a psychological multi-dimensional character. Early colonial models and/or perceptions of the human condition of the Native-American in Spanish-America were the direct outgrowth of its colonial educational system. In view of the hegemonic process encased since the beginning of the conquest and a 300 year pedagogic and educational mission that obviated free thought via the Index librorum Prohibitorum, and in particular cultural assumptions of the “Indian”, questions arise regarding the validity of the text, the verisimilitude of the authorial assumptions of culture, and the authenticity of the worldview of amerigenous populations. Moreover, questions remain with respect to a Western/European model that was created by early chroniclers which was made to fit the new colonial paradigm regarding pre-Columbian culture and the extent to which contemporary Mestizaje may be a barrier to the understanding of autochthonous cultures. Readings include El Indio (Gregorio López y Fuentes), Raza de Bronce (Alcides Arguedes), Huasipungo (Jorge Icaza), Aves sin nido (Clorinda Matto de Turner), Hombres de Maíz (Miguel Angel Asturias), El diosero (Francisco Rojas Gonzalez), Balún Canán (Rosario Castellanos), Los ríos profundos (José María Arguedas) plus short selections from La semana de colores (Elena Garro) and Todos los gatos son pardos (Carlos Fuentes).
