SPN 326k • Introduction to Spanish Literature before 1700
10:00 AM-11:00 AM
This course is a survey of literature in Spain from its earliest manifestations in the Middle Ages through the Golden Age. Some works are read in their entirety while others are selections. Most of the texts are presented in the language of the period, which requires attentive reading and a concerted effort to learn new vocabulary and differences in meaning and pronunciation from modern Spanish.
Supplementary information will be provided in the lectures and will focus on contextual considerations and essential points of literary analysis. In addition emphasis will be placed on distinguishing the traditional elements of Spanish literature from Renaissance-inspired expression and themes.
