Course Description
The course is designed to teach students how to write phonetic transcriptions (using IPA symbols) in order to understand the sounds and patterns of spoken Spanish, including regional variations. Students also look at major differences between English and Spanish and work on their own pronunciation of Spanish.
Grading Policy
The final grade is based on the percentage of total points earned (A=90+, B=80+, C=70+, D=60+). 200 pts Tests (4 x 50 pts) 400 pts Transcription Exercises (20 x 20 pts) 100 pts Final Exam (1 x 100 pts) 50 pts Attendance (50 pts - 5 pts per day missed) 750 pts TOTAL

All course materials will be accessible online from my homepage (see URL: http://www.laits.utexas.edu/~orkelm/kelm.htm ). These materials include video recordings from various locations in Latin America and Spain that students transcribe phonetically.
