SPN 327 • Advanced Grammar and Composition
10:00 AM-11:30 AM
The premise of the course is that grammatically correct expression is essential in writing. Consequently it offers a thorough review of Spanish grammatical usage and an in-depth study of the more problematic aspects of Spanish grammar encountered by English speakers. It is designed to prepare students to write grammatically correct essays in upper-division Spanish classes on Literature, Linguistics, and Culture. The course is conducted in Spanish. While the focus of the course is on writing skills, students are expected to use Spanish in the classroom so as to enhance their speaking skills. Learners will develop their command of written Spanish through a variety of readings and exercises as well as through writing activities and compositions. The course employs readings from literary and periodical sources as context material to study grammar and composition writing. Assignments focus on improving written expression by clarifying grammatical points and introducing vocabulary and phrasing in Spanish. Although learners will improve their use of Spanish, mastery of Spanish grammar cannot be achieved in a one-semester course. The course can provide learners with a clear understanding of the difficulties inherent in the distinctions between English and language; however, practice, diligence, and ultimately a long-term commitment to learning Spanish is required for written and oral fluency. Owing to the fact that the textbook used offers good grammatical explanations, class time will be devoted to reviewing the exercises prepared previously. Thus, it is indispensable for each learner to read, study and prepare in advance the material assigned for each class day. Even if there is little or no time for free conversation in Spanish in the classroom, class discussion, readings, assignments, and tests are all in Spanish.
