Course Description
This course consists of the analysis of cultural topics, as related to business practices, for North Americans who deal with professionals from Latin America and Spain. The data for this analysis come from a series of video clips of interviews with business professionals who are native speakers of Spanish. The video clips deal with a variety of cultural issues that American professionals will encounter when working in Spanish speaking environments. There are over 200 video clips from the interviews. All are accessible from the Internet and are subdivided into six major categories as follows: o Negotiation Style (15 topics) o Language Issues (5 topics) o Courtesy and Social Situations (10 topics) o Time and Scheduling (6 topics) o Preparation for Negotiation with North Americans (8 topics) o Stereotypes about North American Executives (6 topics)
Grading Policy
The final grade is determined by a percentage of points earned for the semester (A=90+, B=80+, C=70+, D=60+): Student Oral Presentations 2 x 50 pts = 100 pts Guest Visitor Reports 5 x 10 pts = 50 pts Interview Follow-up Projects 3 x 50 pts = 150 pts Attendance 50 pts - 2 = 50 pts TOTAL 350 pts
