Course Description

This course focuses on the representation of body in Mexico in the period comprehended between Porfirio Díaz's regime and the post-revolutionary era (1873 to 1940). The main questions we will address are: How modernity is readable in the representation of the body? What is the role of gender and ethnicity in the construction of national identity? How the cultural changes that came with the Mexican Revolution affected the aesthetics concerning the body representation? How modernismo's modernity evolved into a revolutionary's modernity? We will attempt to answer these questions throughout reading poetry, short stories, chronicle and novels, as well as analyzing art pieces. In these works we aim to find rhetorical features that allow us to define a discursive practice of gender and ethnicity as constitutive of the national imagination.

The content of this class will include: Naturalismo or the body as a pathological site; Indian and women bodies in the modernista art; the male voice in modernista poetry; Los cuarenta y uno case: journalism and homophobia; the revolutionary hero or the nation's body; female voices in the narratives of revolution; machismo, poetry and muralismo in the 1920's and 1930's.
