Course Description

The basic aim of this course is to acquaint the student with Cervantes' total literary production. At first, we shall study his early poems, then the "comedias" of the first and second period, the pastoral novel, La Galatea*, las Novelas ejemplares , and finally the byzantine novel Persiles y Sigismunda*.

In each case, we shall stress the relationship of Cervantes" work with contemporary literature , and his contribution to the literary genres in question. The "Comedias and entremeses and the novelas ejemplares will be studied with particular attention. An acquaintance with Spanish pastoral novels, Lope's theater, the 16th century Italian and Spanish story-telling and Heliodorus would be very valuable, altrhough not essential for registering for this class .Throughout the course, we shall examine ideological and aesthetic connections between Don Quijote - 400 anniversary !- and Cervantes' other works. A knowledge of the former is therefore desirable, although not required. * In abbreviated form
