Course Description

This course will explore aesthetic developments in two genres, poetry and theater, in the context of sweeping changes in twentieth-century Spanish society. Rural Spain, urbanization and political instability through the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) are represented in plays and poetry by Federico García Lorca, Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Rafael Alberti, Miguel Hernández and Fernando Fernán Gómez. The postwar, dictatorial period, with abiding tensions between victors and vanquished is reflected in plays by Arrabal and Buero Vallejo and poetry by Alberti, Hierro, and González. Contemporary, democratic Spain resonates in Alonso de Santos' play and in poetry by Rossetti and Janés. Avant-garde aesthetics inform the artistic works of most of the pre-war writers (Valle-Inclán, García Lorca, Alberti) while postwar literature affirms social commitment and resistance via realist expression as well as a counter-discourse using the absurd. In contrast, some of the most contemporary works studied (Alonso de Santos, Rossetti) evoke aspects of postmodernism that coincide with post-dictatorial Spain.
