38th Annual Poetry Declamation

Guidelines for the Poetry Declamation Contest on April 14, 2012

Pre-registration forms must be received by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese no later than FRIDAY March 23, 2012

Each institution can only register 5 students in the same category. This means that students may have to go through a pre-selection process in their home institutions, and only the 5 best contestants will participate and represent their school in the Poetry Declamation Contest.

Students will present two poems. The one selected by the organizers and a second one selected by the participating student.

Registration must include the poem selected by the participant, with the name of the author and his/her place of origin.

Registration is free and open to the public. Registration begins at 8:00 am at Benedict Hall.

LEVELS

Level K - Pre-K & Kindergarten: All Pre-K and Kindergarten School Students with no background in Spanish

Level KA - Pre-K & Kindergarten: All Pre-K and Kindergarten students with background in Spanish.

Level E1 -Elementary: (1st,  2nd, 3rd   grades) Elementary school students with no background in Spanish.

Level E1A-Elementary: (1st, 2nd, 3rd, grades) Elementary school students with background in Spanish.

Level E2 – Elementary: (4th and 5th grades) Elementary school students with no background in Spanish. 

Level E2A- Elementary: (4th and 5th  grades) Elementary school students with background in Spanish.

Level M – Middle School: All Middle school students with no background in Spanish.

Level MA – Middle School: All Middle school students with background in Spanish.

Level I – High School:  (1st  and 2nd  year) High school students with no background in Spanish.

Level IA – High School: (1st and 2nd  year) High school students with background in Spanish.

Level II – High School: (3rd  and 4th year) High school students having taken courses Spanish 3, 4, or beyond with no background in Spanish.

Level IIA – High School: (3rd  and 4th  year) High school students having taken courses Spanish 3, 4, or beyond, with background in Spanish.

1) Each participant will memorize and prepare two poems for the contest: the first poem is chosen by the Department of Spanish & Portuguese, the second is chosen by the Teacher and the student.

Important: the second poem should be 4 to 8 lines long for Pre-K and Kindergarten, 8 to 12 to Elementary (1st, 2nd, 3rd grades); and 12 - 18 lines for both Elementary (4th and 5th grades) and Middle Schools, and 14 to 25 lines long for the High School Levels. NO EXCEPTIONS

Participants will need to provide 3 copies of their selected poem for distribution among the judges. The Department's selections will be included with the announcement.
