A Model for Indigenous Language Revitalization in Higher Education

John Sullivan’s lecture will focus on indigenous language revitalization in higher education, particularly related to his work as Director of the Zacatecas Institute for Teaching and Research in Ethnology (IDIEZ), a Mexican nonprofit research institute. IDIEZ provides scholarships to indigenous college students who are native speakers of Nahuatl, trains them to work as teaching and research assistants, and involves them with Western scholars in collaborative projects designed to revitalize and develop their language and culture. He will outline a series of principles that guide the institute’s activities related to programming for native and non-native speakers of indigenous languages. He will also discuss the creation and support of intercultural and international collaborative relationships. John Sullivan holds a Ph.D. in Latin American Literature from the University of California San Diego and is a former Guggenheim Fellow.
