The XVI International Research Conference of the Latin American Jewish Studies Association (LAJSA) will be held at the University of Texas at Austin June 9-11, 2013. The Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies will be the principal host.

Professor Naomi Lindstrom, faculty member of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, has been an important bridge between UT Austin and LAJSA in the arrangement of this initiative. According to Professor Lindstrom, “hosting the International Research Conference of LAJSA to UT is a means of strengthening ties between the Schusterman Center and LAJSA while drawing attention to UT Austin as a place where Latin American Jewish Studies receive recognition and encouragement.” With the sponsorship of the Schusterman Center, Professor Lindstrom has been able to maintain and develop the LAJSA website, www.utexas.edu/cola/orgs/lajsa/, which has been hosted on the College of Liberal Arts site at UT. This website has grown to include a database of theses and dissertations in Latin American Jewish Studies and an archive of relevant course syllabi within the field.

The organizers of the 2013 LAJSA conference warmly welcome the involvement of faculty and students from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and other allied programs. The LAJSA conference brings together scholars from Latin America, Israel, and the United States who work on a wide variety of Latin American Jewish topics; it is an interdisciplinary gathering that includes students of literature and culture, creative writers, historians, demographers, and anthropologists, among others. [Call for Papers]
