El Norte (1983) by Gregory Nava

Mon, November 5, 2007 • 7:30 PM • MEZ 1.306

"El Norte" by Gregory Nava tells the story of two brothers that flee
Guatemala in the early 1980s due to ethnic and political persecution.
They journey through Mexico dreaming of finding a new home in the
United States. Los Angeles, California is their final destiny, where
they arrive only to discover the difficulties of living in the U.S.
without official documentation.

Produced in 1983, the picture tells their story with astonishing visual beauty,
and a uncannily neo-realist aesthetic. Further, the movie received an Oscar
nomination for best original screen play in 1984.

This viewing will have a special presentation by Prof. Arturo Arias,
one of the co writers of the film's screenplay.
