September 29, 2008 marks the centennial anniversary of the death of Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (1839-1908), Afro-Brazilian author hailed by some as the "greatest writer(s) ever produced in Latin America". Dr. Ivan Teixeira will speak on the life and work of Machado de Assis. Dr. Teixeira is an expert on Brazilian literature and recently joined the UT faculty as a Lozano Long Professor.
